200 years Frankenstein

Dutch moviemagazine Schokkend Nieuws has organised an exhibition during the Haarlem Comic Days, for all the artist associated with them. I have a few older pieces on display and made this new one, because the overall theme this year is 200 years Frankenstein. Yes, that book by Mary Shelley is that old already!

De Cowboy, de Outlaw, de Sheriff en de Hoer

Dutch folksinger Björn van der Doelen asked me to create his new recordcover. He wanted it to have a western movie look & feel. It turned out pretty cool! And it's a good record too. If you speak the local dialect, Brabants, you might even understand the lyrics...

Woodmas!

I made this poster for the Woodmas! event that was organized in Berlin. An evening to celebrate the movies and habits of famous b-movie director Ed Wood.  I depicted the iconic characters from Plan 9 From Outer Space, all in a walking dead parade after a cross-dressed Ed Wood. This ridiculous scene not only fits the movie, it also captured the soul of the event; dress up funny, get wasted, dance to old horror movie tunes. Not only had I fun making this poster, the event itself was a blast too! Can't wait for next year...

First some quick sketches, we chose the last one.

Then a little colorsketch

Final image, with a tiny bit of help from photoshop on the lights

Final image with type.

Calculator Shock

Unfortunately not selected for the 'Young Illustrators Award', but an interesting piece nonetheless. There really is not too much concept behind it, just having fun painting. But it can't hurt adding some deeper thoughts with your entry to a serious competition. (not that it made any difference though...)

"This painting is inspired by the classic pulpmagazines, the intreaging cover illustrations full of tension and suspence raising high expectations but often without any relation to the cheap stories found inside. It’s painted on a calculator, a dull machine like a dull story. Instead of reading it, it’s better to drift of in your own imagination triggered by the images on the cover, suggesting a spectacular adventure.
Designed around the shape and forms of the calculator the painting and object become one. To enhance this effect the original swich turns on an LED light inside, creating more atmosphere and mystery from the inside."

100 years!

I was commisioned to paint a portret of a man who turned 100 last month. Because it was to be a surprise I could only use photo reference, always tricky. But it turned out quite well and the comissioner as well as the birthday boy were very happy with it. In the background I used some gold pigments. That works real well with the golden edge of the frame, and gave the piece a classic feel, without becoming kitsch.

Der Übermütige Taucher

My friend Dominic had the veins in his eye popped when he dove a little too deep in Egyptian waters. No serious harm was done but it looks freaky. Since he takes his appearance very seriously, I had to make some fun of him.
