Calculator Shock

Unfortunately not selected for the 'Young Illustrators Award', but an interesting piece nonetheless. There really is not too much concept behind it, just having fun painting. But it can't hurt adding some deeper thoughts with your entry to a serious competition. (not that it made any difference though...)

"This painting is inspired by the classic pulpmagazines, the intreaging cover illustrations full of tension and suspence raising high expectations but often without any relation to the cheap stories found inside. It’s painted on a calculator, a dull machine like a dull story. Instead of reading it, it’s better to drift of in your own imagination triggered by the images on the cover, suggesting a spectacular adventure.
Designed around the shape and forms of the calculator the painting and object become one. To enhance this effect the original swich turns on an LED light inside, creating more atmosphere and mystery from the inside."

Illustration for an article in 'De Handhavingskrant' about the different departments of regulators ('BOA's' in dutch). The strict separation of those departments is concidered a handicap in Amsterdam, they feel it constraines them too much.
